My idea of drinking is rather quite different from people within my age range. I don’t quite enjoy the night life partying to loud music and I shun away from crowded noisy places too. I prefer the classy night life – Like with classic cocktails and expensive wines, a nice panoramic view (possibly outdoors if it’s a breezy evening) and importantly, gossipmongering friends.
Pretty boring I must say. But that’s my kind of “fun”.
It was the weekend before National Day I recalled. An impromptu decision to watch fireworks that night lead two souls in a desperate attempt to find a hotel bar with a front row view. Westin was fully booked and Fullerton’s gonna be way out of our budget.
Fortunately with quick swipes of our mobiles, Axis Bar And Lounge by Mandarin Oriental Hotel seems like the place we’ve been looking for. Situated on the fifth floor of the hotel with decent view of the waterfront, Axis does offer guests a slightly more private setting compared to other lounges in the vicinity. That is provided other guests don’t crowd in front of your table blocking your firework view.
This place seemed to be popular for their high tea set ($42++ per pax/ $80++ for 2 paxs) but given the late timing when we arrived, my partner and I decided to leave it another time and stick to the plan for drinks.
Cocktails here don’t come cheap with most priced in the high 20s. I did cringe a bit thinking I might do better elsewhere. But boy was I wrong when I saw a generous amount of Prosecco poured into the orange soda concoction. That’s the Mandarin Spritz ($26.00) for her. I’m quite more of a Singapore sling guy and the Mandarin rendition is all for me with vodka, cherry brandy, midori, passionfruit juice, peach puree, orange, lemon.
It might be a little pricey for just two drinks ($62.00 with GST) but come here on Mondays to Thursdays, 6pm – 8pm for their oriental moments with cocktails at $16.00, beer at $11.00 with complimentary sides to go with. A fairly enough deal for somewhere classy downtown.A rather nice evening that ended with the array of fireworks in the sky. I wouldn’t mind coming a few more times or try their high tea set here too.
