Cake Spade Orchid Hotel Singapore

DSC_0596.NEF (FILEminimizer)Walk along the shophouses of Tanjong Pagar road from Maxwell Hawker Center and it shouldn’t surprise you that there are really a lot of Korean BBQ restaurants concentrated in one place. Some are really popular, running on full capacity almost every evening while others just latch onto customers that aren’t willing to join the long queue. But the Korean eateries don’t really interest me. Hence you don’t see any of them appearing on my blog.

But fortunately for me, there’s also a lot of dessert places for me to choose from  within the area. There’s Quarter To Three, Drury Lane, ReStore and even Flor but none is as catchy as Cake Spade. Why the name? Perhaps the owners have a serious obsession with the famous bag brand, Kate Spade?

DSC_0606.NEF (FILEminimizer)Believe it or not, Cake Spade got its name from the spade used in removing sliced cakes and not the bag brand!

But what I’m definitely certain that this tiny space has one of the best cheesecakes in town and believe me. They are really fantastic to have over tea. The Strawberry Toufu Cheesecake ($5.90)- A slice of dense velvety-smooth but yet not excessively rich cheesecake sandwiched in between by a bottom layer of tightly packed biscuit crumbs and a top layer of red berries jelly. It’s no wonder why this is the talk on everyone’s blogs when they come this place. Opt for the other alternative if you fancy peaches but I do wish they have a mango edition should they decide to explore something new but that’s just my personal preference.

img9749_20052013094244 (FILEminimizer)Their Lemon Tart ($4.20) although tangy seemed to be lacking to me. Something like blooms of lightly torched tiny meringues perks as a sweet contrasts to the strong citrus taste of lemon curd. Lemon and meringues- Definitely the best combination invented. Their prices are reasonable unlike similar cafes in the area so this is one place you could spend a bit more on without feeling a too heavy pinch.

The only downside? It is a relatively small cafe sitting no more than 10 people both in and out. But what they lack in space, they make up for their variety of desserts. From cream layered cakes to brownies and crumbles, this is one place I could see myself coming back every once in a while and not get bored.
