I tend to shun away from cafes tucked in the malls. While they are very convenient for meetups, I find most of them slightly more expensive with a somewhat mainstream (boring) concept. But there’s still a few neat ones that does not comply to whatever I say above.
Situated on the fourth level of Orchard Central is Dean & Deluca – an upmarket gourmet cafe known for their unique groceries. Coloured sugar and exotic spices anyone? I’ve been returning somewhat frequently ever since my first visit to this modern stylish cafe.
Dining here might be way out of my budget sometimes, but I must admit some of their brunch-worthy dishes are good enough to share. Their not-so petite cakes: tall layered sponges are pretty decent for tea. Especially their rendition of the Rainbow Cake ($7.50), the current hype of every self-profess cafehoppers met my baker friend’s approval.
A well executed six layer cake with a nice outer coating of Italian meringue which my tea partner couldn’t stop singing praise about. I could almost see the glow in his eyes as he slowly discuss about other variations of meringue. I go out with him rather frequent and trust me, he’s one tough nut to impress. The only downside was it looked way too crumbly than spongy so try not to get the last piece in the glass display.
Click here if you want to find out the flavours from the various coloured sponge cakes here. Mostly guesswork but well. It beats not knowing what’s going into your mouth eh?
Their Croissant pales in comparison to Tiong Bahru Bakery and ABC. Flaky and somewhat moist within but it could do better if there’s more buttery smell. There’s no need to pretend being a health conscious guy if we are talking about good croissants please.
Perhaps I would have fare better for their red velvet cake or dainty tarts. Ohhh well, another time then.
I rarely have good impressions of cafes in and around Orchard. I find them a way too pricey for their standard. But if I need somewhere central serving up decent food, I can bet on Dean & Delcua to deliver. Come during the late afternoons on weekdays. The open concept cafe is almost empty and very conducive for discussion over cakes and coffee.
PS: Dean & Deluca is now opened at HillV2, HillView Avenue too.
