East Ocean Teochew Restaurant has undeniably one of the best snowskin mooncakes in Singapore. Each of these petite lunar treats areexquisitely if not intricately made from scratch. All the knelling and all the molding are made with hands. Dusted with snowy powder, their signature snowskin mooncakes are the highly sought ones that I must have for every mid-autumn festival. I can do away with carrying lanterns or burning them as with all other children would when their parents aren’t looking and even forgo sipping tea and eating peeled pomelo.

But there’s one thing I can never do without is a box of their mini snow white pastries. It’s not just a want but a need.

You might ask me why the fuss over one particular brand of mooncakes when there’s so many establishments that crafts almost the same flavours. Then I will tell confide in you about how delicate and chewy their snowskin are and how deliciously sweet their fillings are too.¬†You could truly savor the filling and yet not having that overkill feeling whilst enjoying the soft chewy texture of the thin mochi skin. It’s one of those mooncakes that I just need to have more and more. Trust me. Once you start eating, you will never wish you want to stop.

Another plus point that makes East Ocean rendition so different from your typical mainstreams one would be the firmness when attempting to slice one. Where most would simply disintegrate and make a whole mess on your knife and plate, I find the Teochew restaurant mini treats still standing firm and strong as I portion them into bite size bits. That’s definitely a plus point for me: The ease of cutting cutting mooncakes without making a whole lot of mess.

They come in four different fillings; the sweet White Lotus, delicate Green Tea, mild Custard and a newer aromatic Black Sesame. Out of the four, white lotus fare the best if not better than most other mooncakes brands I tried over the years. The paste is pleasing to the palette and I enjoy the smooth silky consistency. Green tea is the runner up and mild while yellow custard could be slight richer as it hover around the range of bland.

When it comes to mooncakes, I prefer to stick to a few brands although once in a while curiosity calls out to me to try newer ones. But I always make sure I never end the festive season without sampling a box or two from East Ocean. I would even go as far that it’s the standard I expect for all snowskins mooncakes.
