I am a heavy Instagram user, always scouring on my smartphone for the newest cafe in town or seeking inspiration for my next outing with friends. It is also the best social platform to see what’s the next in trend food. At one point I kept seeing dim sums from Tim Ho Wan on my news feed and on another occasion, the croissant-doughnut pastry seemed to be popping on everybody’s account.
Cupcakes on the other hand seem to be receiving lesser attention these days. I hardly see a photo of the coloured frosting dainty cake now and I wonder are they losing popularity because they are so common, almost on every cafes’ menu. Too boring for the masses if I hassle a guess.
I am not fond of cupcakes myself since I can bake them myself spam as much frosting as I want instead of paying $3.50 or even $5.00 for just one. But I must admit they do make very good gifts capable of lifting the worst mood swings and brightening someone’s gloomy day.
I still think the best cupcakes are from Plain Vanilla. I could buy them in the early afternoons explore the neighbourhood under the hot Sun then reaching Tampines late evening and still find the frosting intact. Imagine opening to a box of cupcakes only to realise the piping have gone out of shape sweating butter profusely – Not a sign to impress people eh?Their frostings are a little sweeter compared to other cupcake shops but they pipe just enough without making their petite cake too heavy. Sitting in nicely wrapped paper boxes definitely score cookie points from me.
While they don’t focus a lot on localised flavours like Kiss Bakery on the other side of Tiong Bahru, their classic Lavendar Earl Grey and Red Velvet cupcakes are in my opinion, the best in Singapore.
