When I came to know about the restaurant named after a duck-billed animal back sometime ago, it was still a small little shop tucked amidst Clifford Centre of Raffles Place. Hidden from view and easy to forgo since it occupy the corner of one floor.

Pastas aren’t always at the top of my mind when it comes to what to dine. So I have to confess that I didn’t held the Italian- Mediterranean restaurant in high regard at that point in time.

Truffle Fries ($6.90).

But despite my lack of interest in them, my friends were always raving about their one of a kind pastas. The variety that you don’t find even in most Italian restaurants. So when I got news about of their grand opening at Bugis Junction, I knew it was a good opportunity to wrestle a partner and try their pastas for myself. A quick glance at their menu and I have to say it’s pretty extensive. From your greens and side dishes for sharing down to their pastas and risottos, everything seem tempting to have especially when there’s visual cues to infer upon.

Since it was only for two, I decided to start off our dinner with something simple. Something douse in white truffle oil and topped with generous shavings of truffle. And that’s how I love their rendition of the French classics.

Setting aside truffles, another one of my favourite ingredients is prosciuttos or Parma ham. Happiness was when I saw Prosciutto & Truffles ($18.50). A dish of homemade well sauteed garlic-cream pastas garnished with thinly sliced Italian ham and truffles. As good as it was, my partner and I found the pasta dish to be overpowering. Would be better if the taste was more balanced.

If you aren’t a fan of flour, you might considering opting for their mains which I thought was equally good. Take for instant, their crispy and melt in the mouth Pressed Pork Belly ($19.90) then drizzled in a generous serving of  braised apples, garden vegetables and a honey & clove apple glaze. A wonderful complement I must say.

True to their Mediterranean cuisine, everything is fresh and of a certain quality. So if you’re in the mood for fresh homemade pasta under $20, Platypus Kitchen is one choice to consider!
